How to install OS X Mavericks in Virtualbox with N.Mac OS X Yosemite Hackintosh System Requirements:.Replace "1920x1080x32" with whatever resolution you're using. Replace "Name of virtual machine" with the name of your virtual machine- you can find the name of your virtual machine in the left pane of the Virtualbox main window (in the screenshot below, my virtual machine is named "Mountain Mac 2"). This command activates "vboxmanage", a command-line program included with Virtualbox that allows you to edit the properties of your virtual machine, including its built-in resolutions. Vboxmanage setextradata "Name of virtual machine" "CustomVideoMode1" "1920x1080x32" You can do this by opening the Start Menu, and typing "command prompt" into the Start Menu search bar. Then, type the following command into the Command Prompt. Open the Command Prompt in Windows (make sure you are logged into an Administrator account on Windows). For instance, if you want to use the 1600x900 resolution, type in "1600x900x32". Once you've saved it, turn off the virtual machine. You can change "1920x1080x32" to whatever resolution best fits your monitor. This is normal Mac OS X has installed successfully. When the installation finishes, Mac OS X will crash into a black screen with white text. Once you have selected the appropriate options from the "Customize" screen, return to the installation summary page and click "Install". All it does is decrease the default screen size of your virtual machine from 1280x1024 to 1024x768. However, Virtualbox doesn't support Mac OS X graphics anyways, so this option is essentially pointless for virtual machines. Normally, it allows Mac OS X to work better with your computer's graphics card.

Did that happen here? He took the physical details from Holt, the place names of the streets and what the country looks like and the location of things, but it’s not this town. The one with the old many dying and the preacher. There’s a reference in chapter 34 to his earlier novels, where Addie and Louis are discussing the upcoming theatrical season in which they are featuring the last book about Holt Country. You’ve done too much of that yourself, if I may say so. She tells him he is acting like a teenager. When Louis’s daughter visits, her explains that it is a decision they’ve made to be free. One would think at their age they ought to be free to indulge themselves a little, but this a parochial town and Addie’s intention is more of a challenge than she initially realises. You never came over or made a point of saying anything, she said. I know what it was like for me after my wife died, and I could see that you were doing better than did. How you managed your life after Carl died. When Louis tells Addie he has thought of her, admiring her character, she responds:īecause of how you live. Challenging the Quiet to Speak Up, Act Out The novel this explores the development of this new relationship, that Addie has no wish to hide, and it’s repercussions, in that frank, open way Haruf has of confronting his characters with their often uncommunicative selves, forcing them out of their silences, of their set ways, for their own benefit. I’ve made up my mind I’m not going to pay attention to what people think. She thinks it might help and wonders if he has a similar issue. That he spend nights with her, in her bed. They’re not close, but one morning Addie arrives on Louis’s doorstep with an unorthodox proposal to alleviate her insomnia. This time we meet neighbours Louis and Addie, who are both widowed, early 70’s, living alone, with Ruth, in her 80’s in the house between them. Like the Plainsong Trilogy, it takes place in the provincial town of Holt where all Haruf’s book were set. This is a book which is simple, yet affecting, which, in this cold cynical world, is something we all need now and then.During the weekend, I took a break from my current read to pick up this final slim book written by Kent Haruf, knowing it would be a gentle, soothing read that makes little demand of the reader. When one encounters a positive book such as Our Souls at Night, there is a tendency for the prose to become overly twee or syrupy but it never happens. Jamie, at first, is reserved, but Louis shows him that life does have beautiful and fun aspects and Jamie escapes from the shackles of his parents’ relationship. This is further accentuated by their disregard for community gossip. Both Louis and Addie have emotional baggage but when they are together and get their life stories out of the way, they only live for the present. Our Souls at Night is about breaking free. I’m not going to give away the ending but I will say that the relationship does take an interesting turn. At the same time Louis and Addie are aware that the townspeople are gossiping about them. Every death or misdeed is approached in a tasteful way.Īs the couple start to develop feelings, Addie’s grandson Jamie comes over to stay, in which the trio start to build character. Most of it is tragic but Haruf never lets sentimentality dominate the book. Louis agrees.Īs Louis’ visits become more frequent, the couple start revealing their past lives. Our Souls at Night’s plot is simple: An elderly widow, Louis, is asked by another elderly widow, Addie, to come over and stay in her bed in order to keep her company. In the case of Our Souls at Night I ploughed through two novels, a novella and a collection of short stories. Although I don’t throw the novel against the wall, I also read fifty pages and if the book isn’t doing anything to me I move on. When I finish a novel I like, I do find it frustrating if the following book does not keep up the momentum left by the last novel. This could last for days, but when he did like a novel there would be silence and his secretaries then knew he was going to adapt it. If he didn’t like the novel he would throw it against the wall and those around him would hear the thump. Kubrick would then lock himself up in his office and read fifty or so pages. I remember once reading that in order to find inspiration for a movie the director Stanley Kubrick would have his secretary wheel in a trolley full of novels, from the latest to classics. Yet Benson, burned by his ignominious ghosting years ago and with a decade of knowing better under her belt, still defends him. The district attorney, a black man, voices his concerns to Benson: Stabler is too impulsive, his record too blotted with past violations (including six shootings) and too convinced of his righteousness. Take the SVU premiere, in which Stabler’s wife Kathy is critically injured in a car bomb seemingly intended for him back in New York, he insists on being a part of the investigation despite the conflict of interest. Not that much has changed, though – while it’s no longer tenable not to question Stabler’s brand of heroism, he’s still the hero here. Times have changed, characters say repeatedly in these episodes, amid peppered references to the pandemic and a certain “last four years”. How uncomfortable were SVU and the new Organized Crime going to get? The answer appears to be, at least in the two-hour special (no episodes were made available in advance): not much, or at least, not in a way that would provoke unease with watching a staple of cop-aganda at a time when centering police viewpoints seems less like fantasy and more like complicity. “This has to be a moment where people make themselves uncomfortable, where people in power have to make themselves uncomfortable,” he added. “Presumably our cops will still be trying to do the right thing, but it will be harder for them and they will understand why it will be harder for them,” he told the Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast. How will Law and Order, one of the tentpoles of police perspectives on television, reflect a growing disgust with the gap between TV’s fantasy of competency and the reality of a racist, incredibly fallible institution? And how will it handle a character like Stabler, when the qualities that once made him heroic – aggressiveness, heedlessness, violence – are now seen, rightly, as liabilities?ĭuring last summer’s nationwide protests for racial justice following the police murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, Law and Order: SVU’s executive producer and showrunner, Warren Leight, promised the show would address the outrage and the influence of the hero cop narrative. It’s a dubious choice given the larger cultural reckoning at hand over television’s role in sanitizing police work, allowing audiences, predominantly white people disproportionately afforded leniency by law enforcement, the narrative cover to look away from the brutality inflicted by police on people of color, and especially black Americans. (Both series are produced by Dick Wolf, maestro of a whole law enforcement procedural TV universe that includes NBC’s Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD.) Nevertheless, Stabler is back on TV, on both the new season of SVU and his own spin-off, Law and Order: Organized Crime, which premiered in a two-hour crossover event last week. His line-crossing vigilantism has only grown more queasy in the ensuing decade, as more and more evidence of systemic police brutality collects in the public sphere. Stabler became, for many, the problematic “zaddy” of past TV, a staple of Netflix binges and unceasing cable marathons. After Meloni abruptly left the show in 2011 following a contract dispute, Law and Order: SVU continued with Benson as its anchor, and in its 22nd season is now the longest-running live-action primetime series in history. |
